monday night movie: The Hustler

So on Monday night I crawled into bed with some vintage Paul Newman. I started watching The Hustler, and definitely fell asleep before it was over, but I just thought, if my readers enjoy Paul Newman even a quarter as much as I do, they will love some screen shots just of him smiling and wearing a jacket. And, am I right? Look at him! I tell ya, Ryan Gosling has nothing on Paul Newman.

In the movie he's an up-and-coming pool shark with a sweet spot for Jack Daniels, and he plays against this dude named Minnesota Fats. I'm interested to see what happens next, so perhaps later in the week I'll let you know. He just met a girl, and I think he might like her. She drinks a lot, too. Anyway, if I've piqued your interest, it's currently streaming on Netflix.

I loved this moment where "Fast Eddie" and "Fats" both take off their jackets and really get down to business in their high-stakes pool game.

I mean, come on. Those blue eyes shine even in black and white.

Le sigh. There will never be another.

just about a year ago...

On a sunny afternoon in May 2010, Tully and I stood in the grass at Oyster Fest in San Francisco, sipping on overpriced cheap beer and trying not to breath in the smell of too much shellfish. We hadn't seen each other in over six months.

All we could talk about was New York City.

She moved the next week, I moved the next month.

Now we see each other everyday.

It's nothing really, except it's everything.

Dreams come true kids, and you can quote me on that.

*Editor's Note: Sometimes, late on a particularly dreary Monday night, when half your roommates are out of town and you're home alone, there's nothing to do except browse photos from a long time ago while trying to comprehend your life before you picked up and moved across the country. I think I now have to create my own eras of time to understand my life up to this point. BNY (before New York) and ITC (In The City). It's rather crazy to think that year 1 ITC is almost over...

this is a springtime dressing PSA...

Okay, as you may have noticed, spring is really here. We are in the throws of those glorious months where the temperatures hover around pleasant for days on end, and the sun is a little less choosy about when it shines.

I just feel like I need to remind some people about how wonderful transition seasons are. So many of you out there see that the temperature has reached 60 degrees, and all the sudden you're sleeveless, you're be-sandaled and you're wearing cut-off shorts. Slow down. Take a deep breath. Smile to yourself because it's not yet July, and not even a little bit humid. There's a light breeze out there just waiting to ruffle your hair and toss the hem of your trench around a little.

Spring and fall are the most fun seasons to dress in. Now is the time that all your clothes are meant to be worn. They are just dying to be taken out on the town in new and quirky ways. It's time for layers.

Celebrate open jackets and cardigans worn over blouses. Give thanks for cashmere sweaters and button downs. Treat your ankles to cropped pants and shoes with no socks. Rejoice that you can retire your tights, but appreciate that it's not yet nothing-but-short-shorts time. If you're going to wear shorts, layer up your tops. Wear a flowy, silk dress with a blazer. Pair your navy trousers with wedges and a waistcoat over your tee shirt. Play with short and long, mix them up. Try a hat. Give that socks-and-chunky-heels thing a whirl. There will be a time for mini skirts and flip flops, I promise.

Please, please take advantage of all the ways to work your wardrobe right now. Please understand the beauty of being completely comfortable outside, in your favorite jeans, a pair of ballet flats and an oxford cloth shirt. Please throw a light, floral scarf around your neck. It's the season for whimsy and creativity in your closet, my friends, and I just don't want it to pass you by.

Rolling around in the sand, reading gossip magazines and getting sunscreen on everything.

Swimming, frolicking, diving and tripping over waves.

So many trips to the WaWa for hoagies and iced tea.

Walking for miles as the shallow saltwater pulls sand around our toes and the sun freckles our shoulders.

Playing touch football in the backyard (in a floorlength dress).

Adirondack chairs on the porch. 

Homemade tacos & Mexican Greyhounds (tequila & grapefruit juice).

Turning the DIY bracelet project into a group initiation ritual.

Dancing after dark in the grass to Earth Wind & Fire.

Crowding onto a blanket under the stars, telling stories and laughing hysterically.

Night swimming.

The Rolling Stones and the smell brewing coffee.

Hoagies for breakfast on the beach at 1 pm.

Just - playing. At the house, on the beach, in the grocery store, on the lawn.

A long, breezy afternoon bike ride to the far end of the beach.

Not looking at a computer screen for over 72 hours.

Thinking about nothing beyond myself and my friends for an entire long weekend (except calling my dad on Father's Day).

where's your head today?

 Mine is already half-way to the beach... And it's only Wednesday.

one year ago today...

I sat up abruptly in my little twin size bed and looked across the room. My eyes landed on the two gigantic suitcases waiting expectantly by the door. Even though I was still bleary eyed, I felt a lurch in my stomach so violent it could have thrown me to the ground.

Oh god, it's finally here. I thought. I am getting on a plane today, with a one way ticket to New York City. I have no job, no plan, and a few thousand dollars to my name. What the hell am I thinking?

That was 365 days ago. 

This has been, without a doubt, the most exciting, challenging, fun, frustrating, inspirational, eye-opening, amazing, adventurous, stimulating, ridiculous, wallet-abusive, whiskey-soaked, coffee-fueled, new-friend-filled, and flat out phenomenal 12 months of my life.

And I wouldn't change a damn thing.

I love you New York, happy anniversary.

I was lucky enough to have my parents finally come visit me out here this past weekend. It was a trip almost two years coming - and I can't express how excited I was to show them around my New York and see them for the first time since Christmas.

We had a great weekend - a perfect balance of their uptown, upscale Manhattan of past visits, and my downtown day-to-day life. All the things we did piece together like a pretty great guide to wining and dining with a dash of culture and shopping from Soho to the Upper East Side:

28 things I'm thankful for this year...

I was lucky enough to have my parents finally come visit me out here this past weekend. It was a trip almost two years coming - and I can't express how excited I was to show them around my New York and see them for the first time since Christmas.

We had a great weekend - a perfect balance of their uptown, upscale Manhattan of past visits, and my downtown day-to-day life. All the things we did piece together like a pretty great guide to wining and dining with a dash of culture and shopping from Soho to the Upper East Side:


{We dined.}

• Gotham Grill: White table clothes, amazing seafood and a very 90s New York vibe, like Gramercy Tavern and totally delicious (the seafood salad is unreal)
• The Modern: minimalist, fancy and contemporary - just like the museum (amazing duck confit)
• db Bistro Moderne: fancy and delicious
  
• The Standard Grill: great spot for an early breakfast al fresco
  
• Public: trendy, brunch-y, delicious lentil salad and great drinks
• La Piscine: on the roof of Hotel Americano; lots of delicious fried seafood with a side of DJ
  
• Brasserie Julienne: cute little french joint on 2nd Ave in the 80s, live jazz with your moules frites
  
• Morandi: loud, busy and seriously great Italian fare on Waverly and 7th Ave

• La Piscine: Before dinner every night we had cocktails on the roof with an amazing view of the city
  
• Kingswood: After dinner at db, I brought my parents to meet up with friends and see one of my favorite West Village bars
  
• Public: a dirty martini for Mom, a bourbon iced tea for me and the Bloody Maria for Dad

• The MoMA:the Cindy Sherman exhibit was cool and creepy, but the permanent exhibits are always refreshing and unmissable
  
• The East River Ferry: A fun and unique way to get between Manhattan and Brooklyn - especially on a warm day; we took it to and from 34th street to the flea market 
• Brooklyn Flea (Williamsburg): people watching, antique-ing and artisianal everything - of course
  
• The Met: My favorite museum in Manhattan, and the Steins Collection and Shiaparelli and Prada exhibit were crowded but truly wonderful (unfortunately the Cloud City exhibit on the roof was closed for weather)

• Uniqlo @ 53rd & 5th: picked up 4 shirts for my dad, but the crazy atmosphere and sheer amount of clothes is a little too much
