hello, gorgeous...

I just felt like maybe a little jolt of NYC skyline would be a great way to start the downhill coast into the weekend...

She looks lovely, doesn't she?

E.B. White by way of oscarprgirl's tumblr...

"There are roughly three New Yorks. There is, first, the New York of the man or woman who was born there, who takes the city for granted and accepts its size, its turbulence as natural and inevitable. Second, there is the New York of the commuter—the city that is devoured by locusts each day and spat out each night. Third, there is New York of the person who was born somewhere else and came to New York in quest of something. Of these trembling cities the greatest is the last—the city of final destination, the city that is a goal. It is this third city that accounts for New York’s high strung disposition, its poetical deportment, its dedication to the arts, and its incomparable achievements. Commuters give the city its tidal restlessness, natives give it solidity and continuity, but the settlers give it passion. And whether it is a farmer arriving from a small town in Mississippi to escape the indignity of being observed by her neighbors, or a boy arriving from the Corn Belt with a manuscript in his suitcase and a pain in his heart, it makes no difference: each embraces New York with the intense excitement of first love, each absorbs New York with the fresh yes of an adventurer, each generates heat and light to dwarf the Consolidated Edison Company… ."

{snow style} uptown vs. downtown...

I was just looking at some pictures from this past weekend when my best friend from Seattle was in town. We jazzed around the city, through ankle deep slush puddles on the streets and snow-filled fountains in the park. I like these two pictures because I think they're great examples of two types of typical snow day style. Lauren is wearing a wool pea coat, my vintage wool beret, a Marc Jacobs bag, and her friend Katherine's Burberry wellingtons. This combination achieves an instant uptown, ladylike look, while staying warm and at least sort of dry. I'm wearing my Ray Ban aviators (when am I not, these days?), Tully's Marc New York puffer jacket, tall wool socks with black wellingtons, my c/o Kooba Kelsi bag, and a slouchy beanie c/o D & Y accessories. This combo is a little more casual, and not quite so put together; a bit more downtown, if you will. Note that no matter what you're wearing, a coffee in hand is really the best way to fight off the chill!

room with a view...

Just wanted to share this photo from last Tuesday night...

Crazy snowfall on Central Park South, as seen from a cozy banquette at The Oak Bar, Bulleit bourbon and ginger ale in hand.

{outfit post} snowy stroll in the park...

While the girls and I are absolutely loving our downtown address, we sometimes long for the other world that is the Upper East Side. It really does feel like a different city when you emerge from the subway at 77th & Lexington. Tully and I were feeling nostalgic this weekend, so we decided that a little trip down memory lane, also known as Madison Avenue, was in order. We window shopped our way from 60th to 72nd, then ducked into the park, unable to resist the snowcovered hills and bridges.

We strolled around for a while as snow flurried around us, past sledding children and cross country skiiers, marveling at how different Central Park looks when it's been blanketed, frozen and re-blanketed in snow. It was pretty gorgeous, and may I add, a perfect excuse to take my newly inherited vintage mink for a little outting...

Tully's Anthropologie knit headband; Ray Ban aviators; vintage Missoni scarf; Roxy zip-up; vintage fur coat; Kelsi bag c/o Kooba; Nordstrom leather gloves.

Tully is wearing my Marc by Marc aviators, an Express headband (it's perfection) and a Marc New York jacket.

Those same darn Corso Como boots...

{worth a read} an excellent essay on life in NYC...

First of all, let me say something: What a lackluster blizzard! The falling snow was beautiful last night as it accumulated outside The Oak Bar at The Plaza (photos to come), but I imagined that after I fell asleep, a wild storm would ensue, bringing a foot of snow to my downtown doorstep. Well, it did bring quite a bit of the whtie stuff, but only about six inches. In other words, here I am at work, my rubber boots dirty and wet from navigating the slush being pushed around the streets of Time Square.

Anyway, that is not at all what this post is about. Thanks to one of my favorite Twitter accounts, @EverythingNYC, I found a wonderful essay about living in New York City as a young person, written just a few weeks ago. Nearly every sentence had me laughing or reflecting back on the last few months thinking, "Wow, that's exactly right!" I recommend this short read to anyone living in the city, thinking about moving here, or just hankering for a witty look at life here (other than mine). Enjoy!

getting back in the swing of things...

I've been back in the city for a almost a week now. It took a few days to adjust after my red eye flight, both to the time change and the pace of the city. (Sleeping for five hours immediately upon arrival and not leaving the apartment for most of the day took care of that nicely.) It was really wonderful to be home, spending much-needed time with my family and friends and getting my fill of favorite restaurants and activities. However, as I was driving all around Seattle (ahhh, driving) I realized that - as nice as it was to be there - it didn't feel as much like home anymore. I was officially "just visiting."

Now that I'm in the Big, Bad, Beautiful Apple again, I can't help but brag about why I'm just so glad to be back...

I left with one suitcase and returned with two. My slightly swelled closet content brings me a lot of joy and renewed ensemble creativity.

Mmm Spice, how I have missed you and your addictive-like-crack pad thai.

My queen-size bed with a million pillows > my twin bed at home.

All black everything.

Late night everything.

It's cold enough and socially appropriate to wear my vintage fur jackets.

My new coffee tumbler that is also a french press makes me feel really sophisticated and busy when I'm walking the streets.

I've rationalized that heaps of dirty old snow covered with heaps of dirty old garbage bags all over the sidewalks aren't so bad because at least they doesn't stink like dirty old hot garbage.

Gina bought seasons two and three of Gossip Girl on DVD. Bring on the headbands and Nair-tinis.

Winter in NYC takes layering to the level of art form.

I missed my roommates. There's nothing quite like evenings in our little apartment with homemade spaghetti and red wine; recapping, venting, imagining and laughing uncontrollably about our lives in this crazy place.

Life is unpredictable here, but at least the cab fares aren't.

24-hour deli, you are a revelation. Still. Again. Always.

Today, December 16th, I have officially been living in New York City for six months!

Hooray!
